“Silver white winters that melt into springs, these are a few of my favorite things!”
The Sound of Music was my absolute favorite movie growing up! Julie Andrews, as Maria, helped me discover my love of music at a young age, and I still plan to travel to Austria someday to climb every mountain as Mother Abbess instructed.
Maria’s character taught me to, “simply remember my favorite things” as a way to find peace during a thunderstorm. Today, I’m making my Philo Collective blog debut by sharing a few of my favorite things with you!
So, here we go! These are a few of my favorite things…
- Live music
This list of favorite things is in no particular order, however, if it were live music would certainly be near the tippy top. I’ve had plenty of experience on stage myself, but over the past few years, I’ve discovered a deep love for attending live performances as an audience member. There is something magical about being immersed in the sound and passion of performers. A few of my favorite artists I’ve seen live include JOHNNYSWIM, Thirdstory, The Jonas Brothers, and Celine Dion.

2. Flowers
The smell of fresh flowers is something I’ve always loved. A few of my favorite floral fragrances are lilac and hyacinth because they remind me of spring and my parents’ garden. I used to give lilacs to all of my elementary school teachers…always vying to be the teacher’s pet!
3. Wedding Dancing
Some friends once told me that “Wedding Emily” is my alter ego who only comes alive on the dance floor. If you want to get the dance floor grooving at your wedding, make sure I get an invite. But you better have “Down” by Jay Sean on the playlist… that’s a non-negotiable.
4. Heartwarming Videos
I am a sucker for a good cry… and it doesn’t take much to get me there! I recently saw this video of some amazing soccer players and it brings me to tears every time I see it.
5. Yoga
There was a time when I told Lo that I hated yoga and she would never see me back in the studio. Flash forward a few years and here I am, co-owning a yoga business! Yoga helps me slow down, it grounds me and reminds me to breathe, and it gives me a great workout! (Check out the Philo Collective Yoga YouTube page for some great at-home workout options.)

6. Grapes
Nothing profound to say about grapes – I just love them!
7. Laughing
You know the moments where you’re laughing so hard you can’t make any sound? That is my favorite type of laugh! I’ve also been known to have a “tea kettle” laugh when I really get going. You know we’ve had some good times together if you’ve experienced the tea kettle.
8. Family Time
My parents and brothers live up in Michigan, and I live in Illinois, so any time we get together is precious. When I visit, our time is usually filled with movie nights, walks with my dad, and having my mom solve all of my problems. I’ve come to realize that moms truly do know best!

9. Silence
Some of my favorite moments are the times shared with friends just sitting in silence. It takes vulnerability to sit in silence with someone, and you know you’ve found a true friend when you can sit together without an expectation for the other to fill the space with anything other than their presence.
10. Creating… with instructions!
I’ve been an arts and crafts girl my entire life, but I also have a love for following instructions. Any type of guided creativity, like learning a dance or attending a painting workshop (like our most recent Favorite Things Event) is right up my alley!
